LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Elon Musk’s messaging service X, formerly known as Twitter, no longer has a large, luminous X marking its location atop the San Francisco skyscraper.
After the huge X’s weekend installation on the roof of the company’s headquarters on Market Street in downtown San Francisco, to the dismay of nearby residents who complained about the building’s obtrusive lighting, the city’s building department received 24 complaints.
The decision was made in response to Musk’s post in which he declared the newly renamed company would stay in San Francisco despite what he called the city’s recent “doom spiral, with one company after another leaving or leaving.”
Musk is the enigmatic billionaire who bought the company in October for $44 billion. But the big X didn’t stay long.
“Beautiful San Francisco, though others forsake you, we will always be your friend,” Musk wrote.
“This morning, building inspectors observed the structure being dismantled,” a spokesperson from the city Department of Building Inspection said by email on Monday.

“The property owner will be assessed fees for the unpermitted installation of the illuminated structure,” X said the removal was voluntary.
Locals captured footage of the enormous X blazing, pulsating, and strobing throughout the weekend; several objected to the obtrusive lights.
X user @itsmefrenchy123 said they would feel “LIVID” if they saw the vivid logo “right across from your bedroom.”
@DollyMarlowe, a user on X, wrote: “I’m just astounded at the flagrant lack of consideration for anyone ever.”
An inspector with the Department of Building Inspection noted in a report from the weekend that firm representatives repeatedly refused municipal authorities’ requests for access to the roof so they could examine the logo.
The inspector took note of one representative’s comment that the sign was only temporary.
