LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Amazon has filed a lawsuit challenging its participation in a group of businesses subject to strict European Union internet content regulations.
Technology experts have predicted that other tech titans may follow Amazon’s lead.
Two weeks after German online retailer Zalando sued the European Commission over the same matter, Amazon filed a challenge before the General Court of Luxembourg, the second-highest court in Europe.
19 online platforms and search engines were classified as very large online platforms (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which went into effect last year and has more than 45 million users.

Due to the VLOP designation, businesses must take additional measures to combat illicit online content.
“If the VLOP designation were to be applied to Amazon and not to other large retailers across the EU, Amazon would be unfairly singled out and forced to meet onerous administrative obligations that don’t benefit EU consumers,” an Amazon spokesperson said.
According to the American corporation, it has not been designated as the biggest retailer in any of the EU nations where it conducts business and neither have its larger competitors.
The representative claimed that Amazon “does not fit this definition of a ‘Very Large Online Platform’ under the DSA and therefore should not be designated as such.”
The US intends to prevent limiting government contact with social media companies.
The business requested that the General Court revoke its designation. An inquiry for comment was not immediately answered by the EU executive.
