LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has ordered the immediate evacuation of staff, students, and properties out of the University’s main library complex following an explosion that occurred in the facility leaving a crack on the wall of the building.
The Management through the Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, in a statement, said the immediate evacuation is critical to arresting the issue.
The statement reads, “Following report of an explosive sound that rocked the University of Calabar Main Library building yesterday and the resultant effect of a crack in the building, the Vice Chancellor has directed an urgent and total evacuation from the building.

“Accordingly, staff and students are hereby directed to keep away from the University Library building henceforth. The Chief Security Officer and the University Librarian are to ensure the total evacuation of staff, students, and all University properties out of the building with immediate effect.
“The Chief Security Officer is to seal up the building and ensure the security of any other University property that may be left behind.”
“The decision to shut down the building is with immediate effect. The University librarian and chief security officer are to jointly ensure urgent and total evacuation of staff, students and properties out of the building as well as enforce the sealing of the structure.”
The extent of the damage and whether there were any casualties remains unconfirmed, as authorities are still investigating the cause of the explosion.
