ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – There is palpable tension in Enugu State as some faceless individuals acting under the guise of enforcing sit-at-home order are seen shooting sporadically, ordering traders to close their shops and go home.

This is despite the strong warning by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, on Tuesday, urging the residents to ignore the illegal one week sit-at-home order and go about their daily activities as adequate security measures have been put in place to protect lives and property.

Voiceofnaija.ng had reported that Mbah, in his warning, threatened to shut down markets, schools, and revoke their licenses, if they observe the sit-at-home order.

But on Wednesday, there was pandemonium in parts of the State as the gunmen tried to enforce the order.

According to sources, the faceless individuals are those boys who operated at Ishi Eke, in Ebonyi State on Tuesday, 4 July. The sources added that they came with the Sienna.

Following this, banks, fuel stations, markets, and other business outlets that opened earlier for business have shut down for safety.

Some areas affected in Enugu are NOWAS, New Haven Artisan Market, Agbani Road, Amokwe bus stop, Orie Emene, WTC, UNEC, Centenary Junction, among others.

An eyewitness who narrated her experience said that on her way to work, she heard a gun shot around some minutes after ten.

She said: “I looked up and saw some guys run out of Keke bus with gun. Nobody was actually shot but they were scaring people away. We were watching from a house I ran into close to the bus stop.

“I had to call my son’s teacher immediately because they went for First School Leaving exam at Idaw River Primary School. The teacher said they came with the same Keke and shot sporadically into the air and ran away but the children were locked inside the classrooms and no life was lost.”

Another eyewitness said: “I am hiding as we speak. The shooting is unbelievable and the gunmen were armed to the teeth.”

He added that the shooting happened both at Texaco Bus stop and Liberty Bus stop which are two busy areas in Abakpa Nike, Enugu.

“I was in my shop, when it all started. Suddenly, we began to hear gun shots; then, everyone began to scamper for safety. At first, I did not close shop; but, few moment later, I ran away for safety without even closing shop.

“There are injuries, because many cars crashed on each other. Many people could have sustained injuries: not, there is no record or I have not heard that someone was killed” he added.

Meanwhile, while trying to ascertain the gravity of the situation, it was gathered that an Air force Chopper is hovering within Abakpa Nike especially at the location where the shooting happened.
