The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a nationwide protest over the arrest and detention of its member, Aminu Adamu Muhammad, a student of the Federal University of Dutse (FUD).
Muhammad, a final year student of the Department of Environmental Management, was arrested last week by State Secret Service (SSS) operatives who stormed his school and whisked him away to an unknown location.
His arrest was reportedly ordered by wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, over a tweet where he commented that the first lady had become rotund feeding fat on poor peopleās money
He was, however, secretly arraigned in an Abuja high court on Wednesday, where he was ordered to be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre.
NANS in a press release on 1 December, decried Mr. Muhammadās ordeal.
āSequel to the exhaustion of all options available to us before confrontation in seeking the freedom of one of us who was arrested questionably, tortured, molested, harassed and detained by the agents of the government, you are hereby notified of the decision of the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students to proceed on a nationwide protest,ā the statement signed by Usman Barambu, NANS president read.
āWe have consulted and consolidated and neither yielded desirable results in seeking the freedom of Aminu Adamu Muhammad, student of Federal University Dutse. Hence the protest shall commence as follows.ā
NANS plans to commence its nationwide demonstration on Monday, 5 December, to demand unconditional release of Mr. Muhammad.
Parts of the statement read, āThe protest is against the Inspector General of Police; Usman Alkali Baba and the Wife of the President; Aisha Muhammadu Buhari.ā
NANS encourages its members nationwide to show their strength to fight against any form of injustice now as āAn injury to one is an injury to all.ā
