LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Federal Government of Nigeria has provided relief materials to over 300,000 victims of natural disasters across the country.

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Habibu Ahmed made this known in a statement over the weekend.

Ahmed, while presenting food items to the Sokoto state government for onward distribution to flood victims and vulnerable in the state, said the items would bring succour to the most vulnerable persons in the state.

The DG appealed to the state government to set up local emergency management committees in all 23 local government areas.

He added that predictable funding should be set aside for the state disaster management agency in order to respond to disasters on time.

Ahmed, who said: “we lost 500 people, several farmlands and animals to the disasters”, added that Sokoto state was among the worst hit by flood disasters in the country.

“Furthermore, banditry, economic downturn, and pre-harvest food shortage have increased the vulnerability of a segment of its populace in the recent past,” he said.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mainasara Ahmed, thanked the federal government for the donation and assured that the items would be distributed judiciously.
