IBADAN, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – A Twitter user, John Gotti, has shared a video of a black teenager handcuffed and checked by the police.
The tweep shared the video on Monday, 3 October, 2022.
According to the young lad, he was stopped by the police for touching his pocket.
When asked if he was stereotyped, he said yes and the video has since garnered reactions from tweeps.
Here’s a video clip of the incident as seen on Twitter:
A Twitter user, Oriyomi said: “Endsars now” while @Darkshellcode wrote: “I got stopped just out of my estate years ago. I was cycling to work at 3am working in a bakery they asked me where I was going. I’m white. Unfortunately it happens to all of us.”
Replying to @Darkshellcode’s tweet, @Meghaniste said: “It happens to black male kids more. It is really sad when white people try to suppress this fact. In fact I would expect a bit more empathy. How old do you reckon the boy is? Definitely not your age mate.
“He was out minding his business in BROAD DAYLIGHT &he touched his pocket.”
@Darkshellcode commented further and said: “I’d like to see the facts of it happens to black males more no one knows. We don’t hear about it happening to white males as people don’t video and stick it all over social media.
“I understand that that. My point is knife crime in this country is out of control kids and Adults all ages you read about using knives. Maybe people need to speak to victim families and get there ideas on stuff. If the police think someone might have a knife they will cuff them.”
Meghaniste who doesn’t agree with Darkshellcode’s view said: “How is stop and search working out for the police though? Any resolutions? It only perpetuates trauma and resentment.
“Knife crime is still rife and it is not exclusive to black communities. Scotland used a different approach and was successful why can’t England do the same?”
According to @spikeawa: “This is so wrong. But if you think being a black man overseas is scary, try being a young Nigerian in Nigeria. That’s a horror movie.”
Mr. Adams commented thus: “I guess the story would’ve been different if they found something dangerous on him. Just trying to look at the bigger picture. Yes, I’ve been stopped & searched before because I match a description. I think we need to make changes in our community too. But kudos to him!”
