LAGOS,Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The National Universities Commission (NUC) says that less than 10 percent of the two million students enrolled in Nigerian universities are attending private institutions.
With 149 private universities across the country, this revelation highlights the significant undersubscription plaguing these institutions.
Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, delivered this news during the British Council Workshop on Enhancing Curriculum and Pedagogical Approaches in Nigerian Universities held at the Continental Hotel, Lagos.
Maiyaki underscored the importance of ongoing curriculum reform to ensure Nigerian universities remain adaptable in a rapidly evolving world.

“While there are over two million students in Nigerian universities, only 10 percent of them are enrolled in private universities. The 149 private universities are undersubscribed,” Maiyaki said.
Emphasising the necessity of continuous curriculum reform, and acknowledging the challenges associated with implementation, Maiyaki said despite efforts to develop core curricula and minimum academic standards, the realization of curriculum renewal faces hurdles in implementation.
Maiyaki, who said it is gratifying to note that this workshop is coming on the heels of the implementation of the recently-developed Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards in line with the commission’s enabling laws, highlighted the ongoing efforts to improve educational standards in Nigerian universities.
