No fewer than 18 people have been killed by armed herdsmen during a renewed attack on residents of Iye village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The assailants were said to have stormed the community around 6 pm, on Sunday, when the residents were transacting business on the market day.
Some of the killed victims, which included women and children were said to have been beheaded and their remains burnt alongside their houses and food barns.
The residents also confirmed that many people were wounded during the attack on the village located behind the Joseph Sarwuaan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM).
Christopher Waku, the Security Adviser of Guma LGA, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said 18 people were killed during the attack.
“18 people were killed at Iye village in Guma LGA yesterday (Sunday) between 6-7pm. The village is after Uniagric (JOSTUM).”
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Catherine Anene, who confirmed the attack, said that one of the attackers was killed.
Meanwhile, 17 bodies have been recovered so far.
