Nigerian singer Peter Okoye of the singing duo P-Square has declared that his support for Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party, is not tribal motivated.
In a tweet, the musician also known as Mr P, said he would have voted for Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo against an Igbo man like former Governor Orji Kalu of Abia State.
The artiste said this while reacting to comments on the whereabouts of Osinbajo amid the new monetary policy of the federal government.
He wrote: “If you think I am supporting Peter Obi because he is Igbo, try replacing him with Yemi Osibanjo against Orji Uzo Kalu and see if myself and Igbos won’t massively vote for Yemi Osibanjo.”
The entertainer had asked about the role of the vice- president amidst the present situation in Nigeria.
“In all of these, where does the vice president of the Federal Republic Prof. Yemi Osinbajo stand?” he had tweeted.
In April 2022, Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo declared his interest to run for the office of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria in the 2023 general election.
He wrote: “I am today, with utmost humility formally declaring my intention to run for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the platform of APC.”
Analysts have said the candidacy of Professor Yemi Osinbajo would divide the Southwest governors and indeed the ruling APC, especially the chances of a Southern President.
However, in July 2022, Osinbajo lost his chance to replace Buhari in the party’s primary elections.
Osinbajo, a Professor of Law, was roundly beaten by his former mentor and political associate, Bola Tinubu, at the end of the party’s presidential primaries in Eagle Square, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos State, scooped 1,271 delegate votes to emerge as the party’s candidate in next year’s presidential polls.
Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, polled 316 votes to come a distant second.
Osinbajo polled 235 votes to finish third.
