Sporadic gunshots were heard in Iwo Road, after protesters took over the streets of Ibadan in Oyo state over the scarcity of the new naira and rejection of old N500 and N1000 notes.
According to reports, the protest began in Iwo Road where gun shots were heard and have now escalated to other areas of Ibadan.
In a video shared on Twitter by @Ibadantwitta_, people are seen running for dear lives at the sound of gunshots as traffic held vehicular movement in parts of the State.
This is coming at the wake of a brewing nationwide protest that began in the early hours of Friday morning over the president’s Thursday morning’s broadcast where he stated that only the old N200 remained a legal tender till 10 April.
So far, protests against the rule has erupted in Lagos, Ogun, Rivers states.
On Friday morning, voiceofnaija.ng reported that suspected louts in Mile 12, Ketu and Ojota areas on the expressway, took to the road attacking commuters and creating chaos.
It was also reported that fighting erupted in some areas on the popular Lagos-Ikorodu expressway in Lagos State over the scarcity of the new naira notes and the hardship the policy has thrown Nigerians.
There were also protests in Mowe, Sango areas of Ibadan as well as Port Harcourt and Onitsha, Anambra State today.
Meanwhile, on Thursday the President in a national broadcast had said the old N500 and N1,000 notes were no longer legal tender in the country, however extending the validity of the old N200 note for 60 days, till 10 April, 2023
