ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied asking other banks to now start accepting old N500 and N1,000 notes.
This rebuttal is coming on the heels of multiple media reports where a CBN Official was quoted to have said banks can now take the old notes.
According to a Senior official of the bank who had reportedly spoken with The Punch on the initial report, Nigerians could now go to their banks for the swap.
The official was quoted to have said: ““Go to your bank but fill out the form before you go. Go with the reference code you generate. With your code, banks will collect it from you. But if it is more than 500,000, you will go to the CBN and deposit it.”
However, in a tweet on Friday evening, Nigeria’s apex bank shared a document where it was clearly stated that the reports were false and did not emanate from them.
