LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-In recent years, the Nigerian film industry, popularly known as Nollywood, has faced its share of tragedies and controversies.
From the untimely demise of talented actors to unhealthy habits and strained relationships.
Most recent event is the untimely death of 39 year old actor, Pope Obumneme Odonwodo popularly called Junior Pope which occured on April 10, barely 48 hours after the death of Jumoke Aderounmu, known for her role as Esther in Funke Akindele’s ‘Jenifa’s Diary’ series.
These recent deaths bring the issue to the forefront and highlights the urgent need for change within the industry.
The industry has provided tremendous opportunities for talented individuals to showcase their abilities and tell stories that resonate with a diverse audience.

Throughout its history, the industry has played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s cultural identity both at home and abroad.
The success of Nollywood stands as a testament to the dedication and hard work of countless individuals who have poured their hearts and souls into its growth.
However, announcing the deaths of these young hardworking individuals day-in day-out doesn’t speak well about the industry.
It is a trend that deserves considerable attention. While death is an inevitable aspect of life, the frequency of these tragedies in Nollywood has triggered a sense of urgency to reflect on the industry’s safety measures.
To address the issue of deaths in Nollywood, it is essential to delve into the root causes.
Unhealthy Eating And Excessive Drinking:

One concerning aspect that deserves attention is the eating habits and excessive drinking among some actors.
While it is important to acknowledge that personal choices play a role, the industry can take steps to encourage healthier lifestyles as I don’t believe that the reason many of these actors died from failed kidney or kidney diseases is far-fetched.
Promoting wellness programs, providing access to nutritionists, and fostering a culture of balance can contribute to the overall well-being of the actors.
Lack of Support For Colleagues:
Another issue that needs to be addressed is the lack of support for colleagues who are facing health challenges.
It is disheartening to witness instances where actors do not stand up for their fellow colleagues during times of illness.
We hear about how they were abandoned during their time of need after they die.
Especially since they are part of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), where they should be able to run to and seek for help.

Building a sense of camaraderie and solidarity within the industry can help create a more compassionate and supportive environment for all.
Many actors and actresses that survived chronic illnesses like Zack Orji got help from the government or family and friends and not the AGN or fellow actors.
Furthermore, the industry’s lack of robust healthcare infrastructure, particularly access to quality medical facilities during on-set emergencies, poses significant challenges. It is imperative to prioritise the implementation of comprehensive healthcare services to ensure the well-being and safety of actors.
Addressing Interpersonal Conflicts:
Instances of animosity and hate between actors, such as the case of Mr Ibu who claimed that some people within his circle of friends poisoned him highlight the need for conflict resolution and fostering healthy relationships.
Encouraging dialogue, promoting empathy, and providing platforms for mediation can go a long way in addressing and resolving disputes, fostering a more harmonious working environment.

Combatting The Temptation Of “Get Rich Quick” JuJu:
The involvement of some individuals in “get rich quick” or JuJu practices is a concerning trend that needs to be addressed.
It is important for the industry to emphasise the value of hard work, talent, and ethical practices.
Promoting mentorship programs, financial literacy, and educating aspiring actors about the dangers of fraudulent practices can help safeguard the integrity of the industry.
It is essential to pursue success and wealth through legitimate means, such as hard work, education, and ethical business practices.
