ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Moyo Okediji, a US-based professor, faced an ugly experience during his recent visit to Nigeria.
After being robbed by armed bandits in his hometown of Ile-Ife, Osun State, Okediji then encountered extortion from police officers as he sought to recover his stolen belongings.
The professor, who had not visited Nigeria in 30 years, recounted the traumatic events that unfolded during his holiday trip.
Okediji accused officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the Seme border with Benin Republic of stealing $500 from his luggage. Subsequently, he was attacked and robbed in his chalet in Ile-Ife by armed bandits.

Following the robbery, Okediji sought police assistance in tracking the criminals.
However, the professor claimed that a Police Officer demanded a payment of one hundred thousand Naira for their services, later increasing it to seven hundred and fifty thousand Naira to apprehend one suspect.
Feeling uneasy about the situation, Okediji decided to record his conversations with the officer, suspecting corruption within the police force.
When approached for clarification, the Lagos Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, did not respond to inquiries.
Okediji expressed his frustration, stating that the incident reflected the dangerous intersection of criminal elements and trusted police officers engaging in nefarious activities.
