LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Google initiated legal action against two groups of scammers on Monday, targeting those capitalizing on generative AI excitement and misusing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to harm competitors.
Halimah Prado, Google’s General Counsel, highlighted that while the genuine Google Bard requires no downloads, fraudulent Bard AI tools are being globally downloaded.
The lawsuit, filed in the Northern District of California, alleges that scammers created social media accounts promoting a counterfeit Bard version, tricking users into downloading malicious software.

Once downloaded, this software granted scammers access to victims’ social media accounts.
Google aims to stop these scammers from creating similar domains and seeks orders to disable them with U.S. domain registrars.
The company has already taken down around 300 related pages since April.
This legal move aligns with Google’s commitment to protecting consumers and small businesses while setting crucial legal precedents in emerging tech fields.
By upholding rules against fraud and abuse, Google intends to create a safer internet and maintain the culture of innovation in the United States.
