LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Recent Data indicates that 60% of street hawkers in Nigeria hail from Ebonyi State, in the southeastern part of the country.
According to the report, the concerning statistics not only reflect poorly on the State’s image but also underscore the urgent need for intervention.
However, Governor Francis Nwifuru-led Government, in reaction to this challenge, has introduced an empowerment scheme for hawkers in the said State.

500 beneficiaries are said to receive the sum of N2 million each, equipping them to launch their entrepreneurial endeavors.
Speaking with journalists in the State earlier today, Gov Nwifuru said his target is to build the human capital of the State by providing alternative means of livelihood for the youth and ultimately eliminating the surge of street hawking that has plagued the State and the nation at large.
Economic experts within the State have, however, applauded the initiative, describing it as a good step towards tackling the challenges and enhancing the prospects of Ebonyi’s younger generation.
