LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The management of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, has denied claims that one of its house officers, Dr. Michael Umoh, died after a 72-hour call.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the LUTH management team in Lagos earlier today.
Voiceofnaija.ng recalls that Umoh, LUTH’s medical doctor, was alleged to have died after performing a 72-hour marathon surgery at the neurosurgery unit.
Following the incident, the Association of Resident Doctors, in a protest letter titled ‘An Appeal By The House Officers Of LUTH’, addressed to the chief medical director, expressed their deep grief over their colleague’s death.

The doctors also accused their senior colleagues of bullying and not providing feeding and good accommodation.
However, the LUTH management said although it understood the deceased family was mourning their beloved son’s death and requested the foreclosure of any media engagement regarding their son, clarifying the circumstances surrounding his death is important.
According to LUTH management, “Dr. Umoh died on 17 September while in church with his parents. The management was informed, and the death was later confirmed by one of the Consultants in his unit (Neurosurgery).

While describing Dr. Umoh’s death as unfortunate, LUTH claimed the narrative of a 72-hour non-stop shift is false.
“The record from the Neurosurgery unit shows that the last time he was on call was 13 and 14 September.
“He was not on call on the 15, 16 and 17 (the day he died), contrary to the insinuations on social media. He was at home with his parents on 16 and 17 September.
“Before this time, the management said he was on call on September 7 and September 8.
“This shows that Dr. Umoh was on call for four days in September 2023,” LUTH stated.
