LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Elon Musk has announced his intention to initiate a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in a recent development that may have escaped your attention.
Musk alleges that the ADL, an organization dedicated to combating antisemitism, extremism, and bigotry, wrongly accused him and his platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), of promoting antisemitism.
To vindicate his platform’s reputation regarding allegations of antisemitism, Musk has declared his decision to pursue legal action against the Anti-Defamation League, with a touch of irony evident in his tweet.
The billionaire celebrity tweeted on Monday, “To clear our platform’s name on the matter of anti-Semitism, it looks like we have no choice but to file a defamation lawsuit against the Anti-Defamation League… oh the irony!”

Musk also placed responsibility on the ADL for the decline in X’s U.S. advertising revenue. He asserted, “Our US advertising revenue is still down 60%, primarily due to pressure on advertisers by @ADL (that’s what advertisers tell us), so they almost succeeded in killing X/Twitter!“
Musk initially positioned himself as a supporter of free speech while unequivocally opposing antisemitism in any form.
These tweets have emerged as Musk faced scrutiny for endorsing posts featuring the hashtag #BanTheADL, which gained traction on X last week.
This trending hashtag, along with Musk’s involvement, surfaced shortly after the ADL announced a productive conversation with X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, regarding combating hate speech on the platform.
Musk’s Twitter comments included claims that the ADL has been attempting to undermine X since the acquisition, falsely accusing the platform and himself of antisemitism.
He warned, “If this continues, we will have no choice but to file a defamation suit against, ironically, the ‘Anti-Defamation’ League.“
Antisemitism has been a longstanding issue on Twitter, predating Musk’s involvement. In 2016, the ADL published a report detailing the surge in antisemitic hate speech aimed at journalists on the platform, partly attributed to the rhetoric surrounding the 2016 presidential election.
Since Musk acquired the platform, reports of hate speech have persisted. In January, a lawsuit in Germany accused the platform of mishandling Holocaust denial, a crime in the country.
Four months later, Germany indicated its intention to fine the social media platform for repeatedly failing to comply with laws governing the removal of hate speech from social media.
Musk himself has faced accusations of perpetuating antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories, particularly when targeting Jewish billionaire George Soros and engaging with antisemitic content on X.

For example, in June, Musk amplified an antisemitic tweet that presented a choice between using blood taken from children (linked to a photo of U.S. President Joe Biden) or expressing hatred towards Jews (associated with a picture of actor Mel Gibson, known for making antisemitic remarks in the past).
Musk’s response, “Gibson is really that buff these days?” while not hate speech in itself, exemplifies his willingness to directly interact with antisemitic posts on his platform. The tweet has since been deleted.
In early August, X also filed a lawsuit against the British nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) after the organization published a report alleging that Twitter failed to address 99% of hate posted by Twitter Blue users.
The group also raised concerns about whether Twitter’s algorithm promotes “toxic tweets.” X has accused the CCDH of unlawfully accessing data and selectively choosing posts to highlight a rise in hate speech on the platform.
