LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) –Lionel Messi has honoured Diego Maradona by donning an old-school Argentina World Cup jersey from 1994.
When he won the 2022 World Cup, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was able to follow in the footsteps of his renowned countryman.
Similar to how Maradona previously did in the 1986 competition in Mexico, Messi motivated his nation to victory in Qatar.
Maradona’s final participation at FIFA’s premier tournament, which took place on American soil 29 years ago, has now received a shoutout from Messi.

Maradona is recognized as one of the best players to have ever lived, and Messi has now joined him in that group following a phenomenal playing career of his own.
In November 2020, Maradona, who earned 91 caps for Argentina, passed away at the age of 60.
Messi, who has 103 goals in 175 appearances for the Albiceleste and still represents them, has said he won’t be participating in the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The 36-year-old, who is now plying his club trade in America for MLS side Inter Miami, has said: “I think not. This was my last World Cup. I’ll see how things go, but not in principle; I won’t go to the next World Cup.”
