LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Residents and business owners around Atiku Abubakar Way and its environs in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, have lamented the excessive flooding caused by heavy downpours in the State.

The victims, while seeking for intervention, revealed that flood had submerged their houses and shops and urged the State Governor, Umo Eno, to intervene in the matter.

Speaking with journalists on Monday, an automobile engineer, Ndianabasi Isong, lamented that he had yet to start operating at his shop since it was submerged over three days ago.

“I am one of the victims of the flood; it affected me very seriously. Because of the relationship we have with the authorities of the Beulah Nursery/Primary School, we were able to relocate customers’ cars and park them at the front of the school. The flood has posed a lot of challenges, when it rains, it affects us financially,” he said.

“We are managing to survive because we have sincere customers that look for us wherever we are despite the flood. As you can see in my shop, the rain has destroyed everything including our tools. One of my boys fell into the flood and sustained injuries, he has been in the hospital.”

Isong also attributed poor waste disposal to the flooding experienced in the community.

“Poor waste management is what is causing the flood because as they dump them, they block the drainages, making it difficult for water to flow freely. I appeal to Pst Umo Eno, our governor, to see what he can do to help us in this area,” he said.

Recounting his experience, the head of ICT, Beulah Nursery/Primary, Rotimi Awobode, said whenever there was a heavy downpour, floods usually penetrate into the school compound and enter classrooms.

“We have a lot of business centres here, we really appeal to the government to help us open the gutters and tunnels so that water can pass through easily. If it rains for two days nobody here will come out,” he said.
