LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- 32-Year-Old property agent, Kabir Yamusa, was on 13 March, arraigned before a Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly defrauding his client of N400,000 house rent.
Yamusa was charged of no fixed address, for criminal breach of trust and cheating, before the Presiding Judge Mohammed Wakili.
According to the prosecuting counsel, Stanley Nwafoaku, the complainant on 3 March, reported the case matter at divisional police headquarters Wuse Zone 3, Abuja.
Nwafoaku claimed that sometime in January, the complainant got in touch with the defendant, a real estate agent, in order to get him a one-room flat in Jabi.
He alleged that the complainant paid N400,000 into the defendant’s account, and immediately after Yamusa received the money, he absconded without making the apartment available as arranged.
The prosecution counsel told the court that the defendant was arrested, and during police investigation, he confessed to having converted the money for his personal use.
He said the offence contravened sections 312 and 322 of the penal code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the amount of N200,000 with one surety in the same amount by Justice Wakali.
In accordance with Wakili’s directive, the surety must be trustworthy, have a source of income, and reside in the court’s territorial jurisdiction.
He added that the surety must also provide a Bank Verification Number, BVN, printout, recent passport photograph and a valid identification card, which must be verified by the court registrar.
The Judge adjourned the matter until 26 April for hearing.
