LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Six permanent and 74 temporary shops have been destroyed in an early-morning fire that broke out at Kurni Market in Kano, leaving traders to count their losses.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement on 1 March.
The statement claims that when they arrived, they discovered that a total of 74 temporary businesses and six permanent ones had been destroyed by fire, engulfing a market stall area measuring roughly 160 x 100 feet.
According to Abdullahi, one Aliyu Alkasim called the agency in an emergency at 5.23 am.
“Today, Wednesday, March 1, 2023, our control room received an emergency call at about 5.23 am from one Aliyu Alkasim. He reported an outbreak of fire at Kurmi Market Kano Municipal Area,” he said.
Abdullahi stated that the service dispatched its men to the area as soon as it received the report.
“We turned out our men from various fire stations within the metropolitan and they arrived at the scene of the incident, around 5.27am,” he added.
He said that the service was successful in saving many of the stores in the market area and that no injuries or fatalities were reported.
He said the cause of the incident was still under investigation.
Abdullahi urged the public to avoid carelessly using open flames in the market and to always turn off all electrical appliances and disconnect from the source when not in use.
