IBADAN, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- A 20-year-old scavenger, Ali Ibrahim, has been remanded in prison custody for stealing property belonging to The Redeemed Christian Church of God parish in Abuja.
The police charged Ibrahim with criminal trespass and theft and was arraigned to Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court.
Ibrahim pleaded not guilty to the offence.
The prosecutor, Chinedu Ogada, told the court that the complainant, Ayo Dele of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, New Birth Assembly, located in Dawaki, Abuja, reported the matter at the Dawaki Police Station on August 26.
Mr Ogada explained that the complainant claimed that he found the church was forcibly opened, and a 5.5 KVA generator, a 40-inch LG plasma television and a keyboard were missing.
He also told the court that a mattress and other valuables, whose values had yet to be ascertained, were also stolen.
Ogada said on 29 August , the defendant was arrested and brought to the station, and during police interrogation, he confessed that he stole the items from the church.
He said the offence contravened sections 348 and 288 of the Penal Code.
The judge, Sulyman Ola, adjourned the case until November 15 for a hearing.
