LAGOS,Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) –The management of Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH)<\/a> has raised the alarm regarding an abandoned patient within its medical facilities.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The patient Mr. Maurice Okpenyong, has been left in the hospital by his children, who have disappeared and refused to come for him after BUTH signed his discharge in December 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a statement released and signed by the Communications Department of Babcock University BU, the whereabouts of the patient\u2019s son and daughter are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Okpenyong hails from Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State and was admitted with a diagnosis of Repeat Suprapubic Cystostomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital\u2019s management said it has collaborated with the local authorities, including the police in Ilishan, Area F, and Bariga, to search for Lawrence at both his official and private residences, but to no avail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the hospital’s management revealed that Mr. Okpenyong’s outstanding bill amounted to N399,320 at the time of his initial discharge on December 20, 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, due to his children’s refusal to claim responsibility and his continued stay and care at the hospital, the patient’s total bill has escalated to N1,279,350 as of March 20, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, only N180,000 has been paid by either the patient or his children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expressing their growing concerns, the hospital\u2019s management emphasized the deteriorating condition of Okpenyong, who it said has become unruly and abusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added that the development is\u00a0posing challenges to the hospital staff while they continue to provide care for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital said it has made a public plea to Okpenyong\u2019s family to take him home, saying, it could   no longer ensure his welfare, citing incidents of unsanitary behaviour that threaten his health and the hospital environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement read: \u201cSometimes he removes his urine bag and urinates on the floor and the whole place smells. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is why we have placed him on watch because we are afraid that he may abscond.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
