ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, has ordered a total clampdown on vehicles operating without plate numbers or with single plate numbers in the nation’s capital.
The directive includes the arrest and prosecution of defaulters, as well as car dealers who violate the stipulated time for driving and parking their vehicles.
According to a statement on Saturday by the police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the CP’s order is in response to the increasing cases of armed robbery, popularly known as “one chance,” linked to vehicles with single or no plate numbers.
The police have observed that some motorists and car dealers drive around the territory with single or no plate numbers, posing a security risk to residents.
The FCT Police Command has warned that defaulters will face the full wrath of the law, as the command is committed to ensuring the safety and security of residents.
The police cited Section 25 (5) of the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulation Act, 2005, which regulates the use of plate numbers on vehicles.
The CP’s order is a proactive measure to address the menace of “one chance” operators and ensure that all vehicles in the FCT have proper plate numbers.
The police have urged motorists and car dealers to comply with the directive to avoid arrest and prosecution.

The statement partly read, āThe Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, has given a marching order that vehicles plying the roads with a single or no number plate should be impounded, with the driver arrested and prosecuted.
“Also, he warns car dealers against parking their vehicles in an unauthorised parking lot and driving beyond the stipulated time, which is 6 pm., as defaulters will be made to face the full wrath of the law.ā
Adeh said, āThe FCT Police Command has observed with serious concern how motorists and car dealers drive around the territory with single or no number plates and car dealers beyond the stipulated time, which is 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Section 25 (5) of the Federal Capital Territory Road Transport Regulation Act, 2005.
āIt is no news that several recorded cases of armed robbery, popularly known as āone chance,ā are mostly associated with vehicles with single or no number plates. This unlawful act has pricked the attention of the populace, who have now begun to question the effectiveness of the police in addressing the menace.
āAlso, he reiterates that in the effort to ensure the safety and security of residents of FCT, no motorists or car dealers who come in conflict with the substantive laws with be spared.ā
