LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Remo Stars defender Sodiq Ismail has expressed gratitude and anticipation after receiving his first-ever invitation to the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles.
The 23-year-old, who has been a standout performer in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), was called up by head coach Finidi George for the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.
“It’s a privilege to be with the senior, top players. I hope to learn a few things from them,” Ismail said in an interview with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Ismail, who can play at right-back or right wing-back, has been a creative force for his club team, registering 13 assists so far this season – the most in the league. His impressive performances at the club level have now earned him a chance to showcase his talents on the international stage.
“Well, I can’t say much about my club performance because I didn’t expect a call-up to the national team. So I have to do my best and make the best of my stay here,” he added.
Alongside Ismail, Remo Stars teammates Olorunleke Ojo and Obinna Kenneth Igboke were also selected by Finidi George as part of the three home-based players in the 23-man squad.
“We’re not under pressure, because we will win by God’s grace. If I’m called upon, I will be ready to give my all. We will prove ourselves if we have the chance. We will get the qualification for the World Cup,” Ismail said confidently.
The Super Eagles will first host South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo before traveling to Ivory Coast to face Benin Republic three days later.
