LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Samuel Chukwueze has been named La Liga’s Best African Player for the 2022–2023 season following a successful season with Villarreal.
Chukwueze participated in 37 games this season, starting 27, scoring six league goals, including a hat trick against Real Madrid on 8 April, 2023, at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
“Samu is now enjoying his well-deserved award, after being voted by more than 30,000 fans and 26 journalists from the continent, ahead of other top African players such as Yassine Bono, Iñaki Williams, and Youssef En-Nesyri, among others,” Villarreal wrote about the Nigerian.
After the weekend match against Atlético de Madrid, he won the honor.
He expressed his joy at receiving the accolade on the La Liga website. “This season, I’ve worked extremely hard, but I want to acknowledge my teammates for making it possible.

Without them, neither the coach (Quique Setién) nor I could have accomplished this, and you feel incredibly motivated when your coach has faith in you and allows you the freedom to play and have fun.
“But I think I can still do more,” he noted. “I want to continue working hard. I’m still young, so I’m still learning. This is just the beginning.”
Chukwueze reached double digits for goals and assists for the first time in a term this season with 13 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.
His strong performance this season has drawn interest from a number of English Premier League clubs, including Real Madrid.
