ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly condemned the attack on former Imo State Governor, Ikedi Ohakim, by unknown gunmen.
The Biafran group alleged that it must have been an assassination attempt by political opponents.
Voiceofnaija.ng reported that gunmen had on Monday attacked Ohakim’s convoy and threw explosives at it when they could not capture Ohakim.
The former governor was attacked at Oriagu in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area on Monday evening.
Ohakim’s backup vehicle was bombed, which resulted in the death of his four security detail.
The former Governor was with two of his children and was returning from a visit when the gunmen struck.
A source said: “His Excellency was the main target but his brave driver was smart enough to beat them because they were driving to block him.
“Disappointed that their main target had escaped, they blocked his backup vehicle and burnt it. The four policemen with him were feared killed.”
Reacting, the IPOB in a statement on Wednesday by its Media and Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful, described the attack as uncalled for, and urged the people to protect themselves.
Powerful said: “The attack on Chief Ikedi Ohakim is uncalled for, and we must stand tall in protecting our people.
“Not every politician is wicked. Ohakim is one of the peaceful people among the politicians in the Eastern region.”
