ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Nigeria Police Force has warned political parties and their supporters against actions capable of triggering violence as preparations gather pace for the 2027 general elections.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 4, Makurdi, Morris Dankombo, gave the warning on Tuesday in Lafia during a stakeholders’ engagement with the Nasarawa State Police Command and other groups.
Dankombo urged political leaders to ensure that their campaigns and other activities remained peaceful, cautioning that political disagreements should not be allowed to threaten lives, property and public order.
He specifically raised concerns about misinformation, inflammatory religious rhetoric and tribal comments, saying such messages could deepen tensions and create divisions within communities.
“As we approach the election season, I wish to appeal to all the political party chairmen and political leaders to continue to strive for peace and ensure that their political activities are conducted responsibly and peacefully,” he said.

The AIG said the police would not allow political actors or their supporters to turn Nasarawa into a battleground, stressing that protecting lives and property remained part of the force’s constitutional responsibility.
According to Vanguard, he urged political parties to resolve disagreements through dialogue and respect for the law, rather than allow the pursuit of electoral interests to undermine peace and security.
Dankombo also called for stronger cooperation between the police and communities, urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth organisations, traders, civil society groups and other stakeholders to promptly report suspicious activities.
According to him, community participation would strengthen the ability of the police to detect security threats early, particularly because security personnel could not be everywhere at all times.
He said the police would continue to improve community policing, intelligence gathering and engagement with stakeholders as part of efforts to prevent security threats from escalating ahead of the elections.
