LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Nigeria’s U20 women’s team, the Falconets, suffered a disappointing start to their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup campaign, falling 2–0 to Spain in their Group F opener.
The defeat, shaped by Spain’s early control and late composure, leaves Nigeria needing a strong response in their next match to revive their hopes.
Spain took charge in the 13th minute when Marisa García finished confidently after sustained pressure that kept Nigeria pinned in their defensive third.
Moses Aduku’s side attempted to settle into the game, showing flashes of resilience, but struggled to maintain possession long enough to build meaningful attacks.
Spain’s pressing forced Nigeria deeper, limiting their ability to transition effectively.
The second half brought more Spanish dominance, and the decisive blow arrived in the 73rd minute.
Alba Cerrato doubled Spain’s lead with a fine finish and sealed the result.
The Falconets pushed late for a response, but Spain’s organisation ensured the score remained unchanged.
In the other Group F fixture, China PR, Nigeria’s next opponents delivered a five‑star performance, defeating New Caledonia 5–0.
Huang Jiaxin produced a stunning hat‑trick with goals in the 71st, 80th and 83rd minutes, while Zhou Xinyi and Xiao Yafei added strikes to complete the rout.
