LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Hungary ended a 28‑year wait for a FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup victory with a gritty 71–67 triumph over Nigeria’s D’Tigress in Berlin.
Their historic win came through remarkable efficiency, overcoming Nigeria’s higher shot volume and relentless fourth‑quarter pressure.
Nigeria attempted 69 field goals but converted only 24, struggling to find rhythm despite generating numerous scoring opportunities.
Hungary made 28 of their 55 attempts, producing fewer shots yet finishing with more points in the contest.
The opening quarter ended 21–13 in Hungary’s favour, establishing early control and putting Nigeria immediately under pressure.
Nigeria improved slightly in the second quarter, but Hungary still led 36–26 at halftime after disciplined execution.
The third quarter finished level at 16–16, leaving Hungary with a persistent ten‑point advantage entering the final period.
D’Tigress produced their strongest offensive stretch in the fourth, scoring 25 points to spark late momentum.
Hungary responded with 19 points, maintaining composure and securing their first Women’s World Cup win since 1998.

Nigeria’s shooting struggles remained costly, with missed opportunities preventing a comeback despite improved aggression late in the game.
The defeat leaves Nigeria winless after two Group B games, following their opening loss to South Korea earlier.
Hungary will now take on South Korea in their final group game while D’Tigress will face France on Monday, September 7, needing a major turnaround to salvage group‑stage hopes.
