LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – OPay has dismissed reports circulating on social media that the fintech company plans to suspend operations in Nigeria, assuring its customers and merchants that its services remain fully operational.
The company’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Adekunle, gave the assurance at a news conference on Wednesday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the claim of an impending shutdown gained traction on social media after posts alleged that OPay would temporarily suspend its operations and halt transaction services.
The reports sparked concerns among customers, merchants and other users of the platform.
Adekunle, however, described the reports as false, saying OPay had no plans to suspend its services or stop operating in Nigeria.
He said the company would continue processing transactions, maintaining service availability and providing support to its customers and merchants.

According to him, there was no reason for OPay to leave the Nigerian market or discontinue its operations.
“We are here to stay. We are okay, and we will always do beyond banking every day,” Adekunle said.
He urged members of the public to verify information obtained online before accepting or sharing it.
“I think it is important that when information is shared online, that information must be verified,” he said.
Adekunle said the false reports had not significantly affected the platform’s usage, noting that customers continued to conduct transactions while merchants received payments as usual.
He said the steady volume of transactions demonstrated the resilience of the platform and the confidence of Nigerians in its services.
“If you look at the volume of transactions and the way Nigerians responded, it shows the resilience that OPay has as a platform,” he said.
The COO said OPay remained committed to using technology to promote financial inclusion and improve access to financial services.
He added that the company would explore all available legal avenues to ensure that those responsible for spreading the false information were held accountable.
Adekunle said the continued availability, speed and security of its services would further strengthen public confidence in the platform.

Also speaking, OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, said the company had not ruled out legal action over the reports.
Rokosu disclosed that the matter was already being investigated by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.
“As the matter is currently under investigation by the DSS and Police, we wait for the outcome and then take the necessary action,” he said.
He advised Nigerians to disregard unverified reports and obtain information about OPay’s operations from credible sources.
