LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Italy’s Jannik Sinner has announced that he will not participate at the upcoming US Open, due to ongoing recovery from a right knee injury.
In a heartfelt statement, the world No. 1 wrote on X:
“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year.
We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.
I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.”
The withdrawal comes after what has been a landmark season for Sinner.
Earlier this year, he captured Indian Wells Masters title, defeating Daniil Medvedev in a dramatic final.
He followed that triumph with strong performances on the ATP Tour, including victories at the Miami Open, cementing his place at the top of the rankings.

His consistency across surfaces has made him one of the most formidable players of the year.
However, the knee issue has been a lingering concern. Sinner was forced to retire from matches earlier in the season and skipped parts of the clay-court swing to prioritize recovery.
His absence from New York is a blow to fans and organizers, especially given his growing popularity and the electric atmosphere he thrives in at Flushing Meadows.
Despite the setback, Sinner’s camp remains optimistic. His return to training in Monte Carlo signals progress, and the decision to withdraw appears to be a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring long-term fitness.
