ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted an operational licence to City University Abuja, paving the way for the institution to commence academic activities and admit its pioneer postgraduate students for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The licence was presented to the promoters of the university on July 24, 2026, in Abuja, formally moving the institution from a proposed university to a fully licensed private postgraduate university.
Presenting the licence, the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, said the institution had fulfilled the regulatory requirements for the establishment of a private postgraduate university.
According to Vanguard, Ribadu described the approval as a major milestone for the university, noting that it had successfully crossed the necessary regulatory hurdles.
“Today marks the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new era. You have crossed all the hurdles. The university is now approved and no longer proposed,” he said.
The NUC boss said the university had been cleared to begin operations with its approved academic programmes, while urging its management to maintain the Commission’s standards on quality assurance, academic excellence and regulatory compliance.

He also disclosed that the university’s designated mentor institution would provide technical guidance and other forms of institutional support during its take-off and subsequent development.
Speaking on behalf of the promoters, a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, Uzoechina Agu, thanked the NUC for what he described as a rigorous and transparent licensing process.
Agu assured the commission that the institution would be built around academic excellence, innovation, integrity and accountability.
He said the granting of the licence fulfilled the promoters’ long-standing ambition of establishing a world-class institution focused on postgraduate education, research, entrepreneurship and leadership development.
According to him, the university is ready to begin academic activities, with facilities, academic and administrative personnel, as well as student support systems put in place ahead of the admission of its pioneer students.
He said the institution would provide a technology-driven learning environment with emphasis on innovation and industry relevance to prepare graduates for opportunities in Nigeria and abroad.
