LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Nigeria’s U18 women’s basketball team, the Junior D’Tigress suffered heartbreak in the final of the 2026 U18 Women’s AfroBasket, losing 77–68 to Mali despite a spirited performance.
The opening quarter proved costly, as Mali raced ahead 26–15, leaving Nigeria struggling to recover from the deficit.
The Junior D’Tigress fought back in the second quarter, tightening defense and scoring 15 points, while Mali managed only 13.
The third quarter was evenly matched, both sides scoring 13 points, showing Nigeria’s determination to stay in contention.
In the final quarter, the Junior D’Tigress matched Mali point-for-point with 25 each, but the early gap remained decisive.
Couda Keita was unstoppable on the court for Mali leading the scoring with 25 points and four rebounds.

Nigeria’s Favour Anari posted 23 points and 10 rebounds while Khadija Alli delivered 13 points and 5 rebounds, but their efforts couldn’t overturn Mali’s commanding advantage.
Nigeria’s resilience was evident, yet their slow start undermined chances of victory, highlighting importance of strong openings in finals.
Mali’s composure under pressure contrasted Nigeria’s struggles, ensuring their triumph and denying Nigeria the championship glory they desperately sought.
The loss underscores Nigeria’s need for sharper execution, especially in early stages, to compete effectively against disciplined opponents.

Meanwhile, Egypt won the bronze medal after beating hosts Cote d’Ivoire with a score of 60-52.
