LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) ā The football world has continued to show support and offer condolences to the family of late Ugandan footballer David Owori who was beaten to death in an armed robbery, Voice of Naija – VONa Communications reports.
27-year-old Owori who was the captain of Ugandaās biggest club SC vIlla reportedly sustained fatal injuries after he was attacked by suspected robbers who allegedly attempted to steal his mobile phone and other personal belongings.
According to reports, the footballer resisted the robbery, prompting the assailants to brutally assault him with cobblestones before fleeing the scene.
He was rushed to a nearby medical facility while still conscious by his close friend and former SC Villa teammate, Nicholas Kabonge, where he received initial treatment.
However, his condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly, and he later succumbed to his injuries.

SC Villa officials confirmed Owori’s death on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, bringing an abrupt end to the life of one of the club’s most prominent players and sending shockwaves through Uganda’s football community.

During a prayer session held at St. Peterās Catholic Church, Nsambya, for the late player, footballers, coaches, fans and others, gathered to mourn his loss.
His teammate Arnold Odong who spoke during the prayers revealed Oworiās thoughts before his untimely demise.
āWhen I heard the news, I was so heartbroken, because David Owori was not just the captain of the team, he was like a brother to each and every one of us.
āIf there was a problem that we needed to resolve, before going to the higher people, he was the first person we went to and he never disappointed us.
“Hours before he was attacked, we were together for training, and he (David Owori) told us he was happy to return home for his son’s birthday,ā an emotional Odong stated.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) also expressed their grief over the loss.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack as tributes continue to pour in from teammates, fans, and the wider sporting fraternity.
The incident has also renewed public concern over rising violent crime and calls for improved security across the country.
Only a few weeks ago, Ugandan international rugby player Sydney Gongodyo (27) was also fatally attacked by a criminal gang in Kampala.
