LAGOS, Nigeria. (Voice Of Naija) A 26-year-old Afghan refugee and champion boxer who co-founded a charity helping migrants in Greece has been charged with the murder of a 38-year-old Scottish aid worker whose decomposing body was found stuffed inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in central Athens in a case that has shocked Greece and drawn global attention to one of the most disturbing crimes in the country’s recent history.
According to The BBC, the suspect, Sharif Ahmadzai, appeared before an Athens court on Wednesday facing charges of premeditated murder, robbery and weapons-related offences. He denies killing the victim.
The victim, Elisabeth-Jane Ross, known to family and friends as Lisa, was from Edinburgh, Scotland, and had spent years volunteering with asylum seekers in Greece, particularly those from Afghanistan and Iran.
She arrived in Greece on June 26 for what would become her final visit, initially staying with acquaintances in the Athens suburb of Keratsini.
On July 15, she told friends she was heading to the Kypseli neighbourhood in central Athens to meet “American friends.” She was never seen alive again.
According to Breitbart News, Ross’s body was discovered on July 18 by a homeless man inside an abandoned building in Kypseli, concealed in a suitcase. Greek coroners subsequently described her cause of death as an “obvious criminal act, likely asphyxiation.”
In the days following the discovery, British media reported that the suspect allegedly used Ross’s phone to send messages to her family, including her father posing as her in an effort to delay suspicion. “I need time alone,” one message reportedly read. Another stated: “I want to be alone for a while.” The messages continued until the day before Ahmadzai’s arrest, when news of Ross’s death became public.
According to CNN, investigators said the messages helped police track the phone’s location and ultimately led them to the suspect.

Ahmadzai was arrested at an apartment in central Athens on July 31, approximately two weeks after Ross’s body was found, after security cameras captured him using her bank cards at several ATMs.
Greek police said he confessed to dumping the body. A replica handgun and a knife were seized from his home during the search.
The case carries a painful irony at its heart. Ahmadzai arrived in Greece as a refugee in 2016 aboard a migrant boat that landed on the island of Lesbos, fleeing Afghanistan after losing his father, a commander in the Afghan army who was shot dead, and his mother and siblings who were killed by a suicide bomber in Kabul.
His story as a refugee was told in an animation published by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 2017.
He subsequently settled in Greece, converted to Christianity, married an American woman he met at a refugee camp on Lesbos and became a champion boxer. Together, the couple co-founded Love Every Nation Athens, a charity supporting refugees and vulnerable people in the Greek capital.
It is through that charity work that he is believed to have met Elisabeth Ross, who was herself involved with organisations assisting Afghan and Iranian refugees in Greece.
Ahmadzai’s wife is said to have provided crucial evidence to police, including location data from a shared tracking application placing her husband at the apartment where Ross had been staying, and allegedly told investigators he admitted to killing Ross because she would not stop discussing Christianity and was attempting to convert her.
Ahmadzai himself has denied killing her, telling police he found Ross already dead and placed her body in the suitcase out of panic.
The murder has triggered widespread public outrage in Greece and reignited a politically charged national debate about migration, refugee integration and public safety, a debate already inflamed by the Ceuta crisis in Spain and broader European tensions over irregular migration.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed condolences to Ross’s family and ordered a full review of the circumstances surrounding the case.
Greece’s policing union noted that Ahmadzai had a key to the apartment where Ross was staying, a detail investigators are continuing to examine as they work to establish the full sequence of events leading to her death.
For Nigeria, the Athens case resonates on multiple levels. Nigeria has a significant diaspora community in Greece, and many Nigerians have themselves made the perilous journey across the Mediterranean as migrants and asylum seekers in search of better lives.
The murder of an aid worker who dedicated years to helping the very community from which her accused killer came is a tragedy that speaks to the complexity of human experience in migration and a reminder that violence, betrayal and grief do not belong to any single nationality, faith or background.
The case also underscores the importance of thorough vetting and ongoing support systems within refugee and charity networks, where vulnerable people on all sides of the humanitarian equation deserve protection.
