LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Team Nigeria capped off a memorable campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by finishing as Africa’s top performer, securing 24 medals to claim seventh place overall in the final medal standings.
The country’s haul included 10 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze medals, a tally that placed them ahead of continental rivals South Africa, Kenya, and Mauritius.
South Africa finished with 28 medals in total but fewer golds, while Kenya managed 12 medals overall.
The achievement underscores the West African nation’s growing strength in multi-sport competitions, with standout performances across athletics, wrestling, and weightlifting helping the nation secure its position as Africa’s leading Commonwealth contender.
Australia dominated the Games with 171 medals, followed by England with 110 and Canada with 62.
Nigeria’s seventh-place finish among 36 medal-winning nations highlights the country’s ability to compete with traditional Commonwealth powerhouses.
