LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Just weeks after the passing of South Africa’s Jayden Adams, the football world has once again been thrown into mourning following the death of former England player and manager Kevin Keegan, who has passed away at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer, Voice of Naija – VONa Communications reports.

Born in 1951, Keegan rose to prominence as a dynamic forward for Liverpool in the 1970s, winning three league titles, the FA Cup, and the European Cup.

His tireless energy, leadership, and eye for goal made him a fan favourite at Anfield. He later moved to Hamburg, where he became a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s finest players.

Keegan’s international career with England saw him earn 63 caps whilst scoring 21 goals.

He ended up captaining the national team due his determination and flair.

After retiring as a player, he transitioned into management, famously guiding Newcastle United in the 1990s.

Beyond Newcastle, Keegan managed Fulham, Manchester City, and the England national team, where his tenure was marked by both challenges and memorable moments.

Tributes have poured in from across the globe, with former teammates, clubs, and supporters remembering him as a pioneer of modern English football.

The England national team also expressed their condolences with a brief statement on their X handle.

“We are incredibly saddened by the news that Kevin Keegan OBE has passed away.

“Kevin earned 63 international caps and scored 21 goals between 1972 and 1982, before managing the #ThreeLions from 1999 to 2000.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Kevin’s family, friends and former clubs,” the Three Lions wrote on X.

England manager Thomas Tuchel who led the team to a bronze place finish at the just concluded World Cup also described the late footballer as “a true hero of English football.”

His passing marks the end of an era, but his contributions will remain etched in the sport’s history.

Keegan now joins the list of people associated with football that passed away in 2026 as we explored in the feature 2026 So Far: A Sad Year For Football – VONa Communications.
