LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Nigerian sprint star Kayinsola Ajayi has claimed consecutive Diamond League victories after winning the men’s 100 metres event in London on Saturday, July 18, Voice of Naija – VONa Communications reports.
Ajayi crossed the finish line in 9.84s despite running into a headwind of -0.7m/s, underlining the quality of his performance and cementing his status as one of the world’s leading sprinters.
World champion Jamaica’s Oblique Seville came 2nd with a time of 9.87s while Britain’s Romell Grave completed the podium with a new Personal Best of 9.97s.
Ajayi has now equaled the Nigerian national record for the third time this season after his previous victory in Kentucky on May 29 and his first-place finish on July 4 at the Prefontaine classic in Eugene.
A year ago, the 21-year-old made a post on X saying: “How I wish I got a lane (at the London Diamond League)”
He has now fulfilled his goal in flying colours and will hope to continue his impressive performance on the global stage.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel also delivered a good performance at the London Diamond League, however, he narrowly missed out on a podium finish as he finished fourth in the men’s 400 metres hurdles with a time of 48.30 seconds.
World Record holder, Karsten Warholm ran a Meeting Record of 46.61s to win the event.
Emil Agyekum finished in second place with a time of 47.45s and Abderrahman Samba claimed the third-place position in 48.10s.
Nathaniel and Ajayi’s performance continue to showcase the strength of Nigeria athletics on the global stage as they build momentum for the Commonwealth Games scheduled to begin on July 23.
