Lagos, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- NIGERIA’S expanding adoption of 4G and 5G technologies is reshaping competition in the telecommunications sector, with operators increasingly competing on network quality and digital experiences rather than subscriber numbers alone.

Broadband penetration rose to 55.67 per cent in April, up from 54.30 per cent in March, as more households and businesses embraced high-speed internet services.

Broadband subscriptions climbed to 120.68 million during the month, according to data attributed to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Fourth-generation (4G) technology remained the dominant mobile network, accounting for 54.41 per cent of total connections, while 5G adoption increased to 4.34 per cent.

The continued migration from legacy networks is redefining consumer expectations. Users are placing greater emphasis on streaming quality, download and upload speeds, low latency, and the reliability of digital services, rather than traditional voice coverage.

For telecom operators, the shift presents fresh opportunities to differentiate themselves through superior broadband performance and value-added digital services.

Globacom, which celebrates its 23rd anniversary in August, is among the operators positioned to benefit from the growing demand for high-speed connectivity. The company’s nationwide network coverage and investments in international connectivity infrastructure provide a foundation to strengthen its broadband offerings as data consumption continues to rise.

Beyond retail customers, Globacom also serves enterprises, educational institutions and government agencies—segments expected to accelerate demand for cloud services, remote collaboration tools, digital learning platforms and managed connectivity solutions.

Industry data also showed continued growth in 4G adoption alongside a decline in 2G usage, reflecting Nigeria’s steady migration to smartphones and data-intensive applications. The trend is expected to boost demand for affordable smart devices, competitive data packages and expanded fibre infrastructure.

As broadband adoption continues to grow, operators that deliver faster speeds, affordable pricing, transparent data plans and reliable customer support are likely to gain a stronger competitive edge in Nigeria’s evolving digital economy.
