ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Gunmen on Tuesday stormed Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, abducting the school principal, four students and a National Examinations Council (NECO) ad hoc official during an ongoing examination.

The attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m. while candidates were writing their NECO papers, triggering panic among students, teachers and examination officials.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying security operatives had launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation to secure the victims and track down the attackers.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, disclosed that one of the abducted students had already been rescued, while efforts were ongoing to free the remaining captives.

She said personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, working alongside other security agencies, had been deployed to comb the area as part of an intensified operation to rescue the victims unhurt.

According to the police, the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, accompanied by the Brigade Commander and the Kogi State Security Adviser, retired Commodore Jerry Omodara, proceeded to the school for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and to coordinate security responses.

The command assured residents that every available resource was being deployed to ensure the safe rescue of those still in captivity and the arrest of those responsible for the attack.

Police added that a comprehensive statement containing further verified details would be released as investigations and rescue efforts progress.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns over attacks on schools and educational institutions, particularly during public examinations, despite ongoing security operations across parts of the country.
