ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has applauded residents for the impressive turnout in Saturday’s local government election, describing the exercise as a strong demonstration of the people’s commitment to grassroots democracy.
The governor, who cast his vote at Ward 2, Udomi Primary School in Esan Central Local Government Area, also expressed satisfaction with reports indicating that voting was peaceful and orderly across the state.
Election observers equally reported a calm electoral process, with voting proceeding without major disruptions in the areas monitored.
Okpebholo arrived at his polling unit at about 10:24 a.m., joined other voters on the queue and cast his ballot at approximately 10:40 a.m. before interacting with party supporters, electoral officials and other stakeholders.
Speaking with journalists after voting, the governor said feedback from across the state suggested that the election was progressing smoothly.

“This election is very peaceful and it is going smoothly based on the feedback we are getting from the field,” he said.
According to him, the large turnout reflected the desire of Edo people to actively participate in determining who governs their local councils.
“The turnout is very high. This is a demonstration of grassroots democracy. It shows that our people are interested in choosing those who will administer the affairs of their local governments,” the governor stated.
Expressing confidence in the electoral process, Okpebholo said the exercise would produce duly elected council leaders at the end of voting.
“By the grace of God, a winner will emerge at the end of today’s election,” he added.
The governor urged residents to remain peaceful throughout the exercise and advised them to await the official declaration of results by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).
