ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Ambassador Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, has officially assumed office after presenting her Letters of Credence to the President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, as both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, noting that the presentation ceremony was held at the Palais de la Marina in Cotonou on Friday, July 10.
According to the ministry, the ceremony formally marked the beginning of Adeola-Ibrahim’s diplomatic assignment as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Benin.
After presenting her credentials, the ambassador met with President Wadagni to discuss issues aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

The ministry said the discussions centred on “the early convening of the next session of the Nigeria–Benin Joint National Commission on Bilateral Cooperation, expanding private sector-led investments, enhancing collaboration in the energy sector, improving intelligence sharing, and advancing other shared priorities of strategic importance to both countries.”
It added that the presentation of the Letters of Credence reflected the shared resolve of Nigeria and Benin to strengthen their diplomatic partnership.
“The presentation of Letters of Credence marks the formal commencement of Ambassador Adeola-Ibrahim’s diplomatic mandate and reaffirms the commitment of both countries to deepening cooperation, promoting regional integration, and strengthening the bonds of friendship and good neighbourliness,” the statement read.
The ministry expressed confidence that the renewed diplomatic engagement would further strengthen the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, particularly in the areas of economic cooperation, security, energy and regional integration.
In March, President Bola Tinubu approved the deployment of newly appointed ambassadors to various countries and the United Nations following their confirmation in December 2025.
The ministry also inducted the ambassadors and high commissioners-designate in May as part of preparations for their respective diplomatic assignments.
