LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Welsh music icon Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75 after a serious health battle that saw her undergo emergency surgery, intensive care treatment, and a medically induced coma in Portugal.
Welsh singer-songwriter Bonnie Tyler, best known for her powerful vocals on the 1980s classic “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has died at 75.
The Grammy-nominated musician known for the global hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday in a hospital in Portugal, following complications from an illness she had been receiving treatment for.
A statement shared on her verified Facebook page confirmed the sad news, with her family and team expressing their grief while asking for privacy.
“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy,” the statement read.
Tyler’s death came weeks after she experienced serious health complications.
Reports revealed that the singer became unwell during a performance in London before returning to Portugal, where she underwent emergency intestinal surgery.

Following the procedure, she reportedly suffered cardiac arrest and was later placed in a medically induced coma.
Reportedly, by mid-June the singer had regained consciousness but remained in intensive care.
Due to her health crisis, Tyler was compelled to cancel or postpone upcoming performances, including shows scheduled to begin in Germany.
Born in Wales, Tyler made history in the 1800,s as the only singer from the country to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Her breakthrough came in the late 1970s with the hit song “It’s a Heartache,” but her 1983 classic “Total Eclipse of the Heart” became the song that defined her international career.
The track earned Tyler one of her three Grammy nominations in 1984 and remained a cultural favourite for decades, inspiring several covers, including a performance by the cast of the television series “Glee.”
Beyond her signature hit, Tyler also earned Grammy nominations for her album “Faster Than The Speed of Night” and the song “Here She Comes.”
Her song “Holding Out for a Hero” was also featured on the soundtrack of the film “Footloose.”
Throughout her career, Tyler released 18 studio albums and continued performing across the world.
She represented Wales at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with her song “Believe in Me,” finishing in 19th place.
Even in death, Tyler’s powerful voice, emotional delivery, and unforgettable hits have cemented her place in music history, leaving behind a legacy that influenced generations of listeners worldwide.
