ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, has debunked a social media document claiming that upkeep allowances under the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme for the 2025/2026 academic session had been suspended, describing it as fake.
The Fund said the document, dated July 10 and falsely attributed to its Director of Strategic Communications, Mrs Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, did not originate from NELFUND and should be ignored.
Speaking on the development, Oluwatuyi described the publication as fake and urged beneficiaries as well as the general public to disregard the misinformation and rely only on the Fund’s official communication channels for verified updates, NAN reported on Saturday.

She stressed that neither the Federal Government nor NELFUND had approved or announced the suspension of upkeep allowance payments to eligible beneficiaries.
According to her, the fake document also claimed that funds allocated for May, June and subsequent months had not been released, alleging that the suspension was temporary and that payments would resume after the outstanding allocations were received.
Oluwatuyi clarified that both student loan and upkeep allowance disbursements were continuing in line with the Fund’s mandate to provide financial support to qualified students in public tertiary institutions across the country.
She urged beneficiaries to ignore the fake document, warning that fabricated publications and AI-generated content were increasingly being used to spread misinformation and undermine public confidence.
She also advised students, parents, educational institutions and the general public to verify all information relating to the student loan scheme through NELFUND’s official communication channels before sharing it.
Oluwatuyi reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to transparency and accountability, assuring eligible beneficiaries that approved tuition and upkeep allowance disbursements would continue in line with established guidelines. (NAN)
