LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA) – Ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled to hold in Glasgow, Scotland from Thursday July 23 to Sunday August 2, the National Sports Commission (NSC) Director General, Bukola Olopade has revealed that sports can be a catalyst for fostering national unity Voice of Naija – VONa Communications reports.

The NSC DG revealed this in a brief statement on his official X account after the commission partnered with broadcaster What Network to provide Nigerians with live, nationwide coverage of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow for free.

“Sport has the power to unite, inspire and ignite national pride.

“That is why we have partnered with The What Network to ensure every Nigerian can watch Team Nigeria compete at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games completely FREE,” Olopade wrote on X.

He maintained that the free viewing program was part of the commission’s efforts in using sports to instill national unity.

“From the Opening Ceremony on July 23 through every thrilling moment of the Games, our athletes journey will be available on NTA, TVC and other participating terrestrial stations, as well as through online streaming.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to bringing Team Nigeria closer to the people, celebrating the hard work of our athletes, and inspiring the next generation of champions.

“Wherever you are in Nigeria, you will not miss a moment. Let’s rally behind Team Nigeria as they chase glory for our nation,” he concluded.

Olopade while speaking in a press conference to announce the launch of the free broadcasting service for Nigeria’s commonwealth campaign also revealed that the welfare of the athletes and technical staff was being catered for.

“Every athlete, every official money is being transferred to their account for their Pre-game camping and also for their Aberdeen camping.

“I have also directed that their allowances be paid for the games (Commonwealth) itself long before they begin,” Olopade revealed.

Nigerian athletes are currently camping in Aberdeen ahead of the games as they prepare to kick off their medal bid on a strong note come July 23.
