LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Afrobeats superstar Davido has revealed the unexpected story behind the female lead in his hit song Aye, explaining how a makeup artist replaced a pageant beauty queen at the last minute before the music video shoot.
Speaking in a recent interview with Capital Xtra, the singer explained that a pageant beauty queen was originally selected to appear as the video vixen.
However, a contract issue forced the team to make a last-minute change.
The superstar revealed that the production team was already preparing for the shoot when the beauty queen’s manager called to inform them that she could not participate because of an agreement with the pageant organizers.

“The girl who was meant to be the lead was in a pageant. We were about to shoot when her manager called to say the pageant organizers had reminded them she was under contract, so we couldn’t use her,” Davido said.
With the shoot already underway and no time to reschedule, the singer said the team decided to use the beauty queen’s makeup artist instead.
“We looked around, couldn’t reschedule, and ended up using her makeup artist instead,” he added.

The decision later became a major turning point for the music video, as Aye, released in February 2014, went on to become one of Davido’s biggest hits.
The video also became the most-watched Nigerian music video on YouTube that year.
Davido revealed that the unexpected success of the video reportedly affected the relationship between the two women, as the original lead felt disappointed after losing the opportunity.
“The video became so huge that the original girl and the makeup artist eventually fell out,” he disclosed.
Years after its release, Aye remains one of Davido’s most recognized songs, with its memorable visuals becoming an important part of the song’s lasting popularity.
