LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has raised questions about the mentality of African football teams after Argentina’s late comeback win over Egypt, saying the issue goes beyond talent and may be linked to psychology.
Bassey shared his thoughts in a post on X shortly after Argentina completed a 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt on Tuesday, with less than 30 minutes remaining in the match.
The singer clarified that his comments were not meant to take away from Argentina’s performance, adding that he remains a fan of football superstar Lionel Messi.
The gospel singer questioned why African teams often appear unable to close out games despite strong starts and being close to victory.
“Taking nothing away from Argentina, and of course also being a Messi Stan, I’d still like to ask, what is it about African teams and not being able to finish well even after a strong start? And more so when almost crossing the finish line?” he wrote.

He wondered if the pattern was because opposing teams were stronger or more experienced, asking whether African sides were being overwhelmed by better competition.
“Is it that the other teams are just superior? Or more experienced?” he asked.
Bassey, however, suggested that the major challenge could be a mental one, arguing that African teams often lose focus during crucial moments of important matches.
“Personally, I think it’s a mentality issue. There’s just something about the way they think, especially toward the end of these games, that switches them off,” he added.
Argentina’s victory over Egypt came after the South American side recovered from an early setback to secure a 3-2 win.
