LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Media personality Toke Makinwa has given her take over modern relationships, arguing that Nigerian men have played a major role in shaping what many describe as a materialistic dating culture.

Speaking during a recent episode of the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa argued that relationships have always involved some form of mutual exchange, saying the idea is not unique to modern times.

She maintained that the current perception of Nigerian women as overly focused on money is partly a reflection of how many men approach dating.

“From time immemorial, a relationship between a man and a woman has always been transactional, right from the Garden of Eden, right from our parents’ days. And the degree at which it is happening now, I will blame the men. Sometimes, that [financial benefits] is all men have to offer,” she said.

Makinwa claimed that many Nigerian men rely almost entirely on financial displays to attract women instead of building genuine connections.

“Nigerian men don’t have games aside from money. Once a Nigerian man makes money, he starts throwing it at the hottest girls. Sometimes, you meet a man and you want to know him but he is offering you money,” Makinwa added.

Makinwa further suggested that this pattern has shaped the expectations of many women over time, arguing that repeated experiences of being approached with money naturally encourage financial demands in relationships.

“Men have offered women strangest things and it made me realize that men feel cash is all they need to show you. Most girls who are materialistic today, men taught them how to make demands,” she concluded.
